Practising Risk-Free With a Virtual Portfolio: A Beginner's Guide

What a virtual portfolio (paper trading) is, why you try it before real money and what to watch for. A guide to understanding leverage, commissions and slippage on a practice account.

A virtual portfolio (paper trading) means buying and selling with virtual money instead of real money, using real market prices. The aim is not to win; it is to try a strategy, a tool or your own behaviour without taking risk.

Why try it before real money?

  1. You learn the mechanics: how buying, selling, stops, targets, leverage and margin work.
  2. You make mistakes cheaply: a wrong size, a wrong direction or a forgotten stop is a useful lesson on a practice account.
  3. You test your strategy: does the rule really work as it does on paper?
  4. You see your own reactions: you find out whether you panic in a fall without losing money.

Where a practice account cannot show reality

  • Emotion: behaviour changes when real money is involved.
  • Fills: practice orders always fill at the price you want; in reality there is depth and slippage.
  • Funding and contract rolls: futures have real costs that simple simulations may leave out.

Be careful with leverage

Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike. Trying 20× on a practice account is harmless, but when the price moves against you by more than your margin allows you are liquidated. Seeing that mechanic on a practice account saves you an unforgettable lesson in real life. See the guide on leverage and liquidation risk.

How to try it on ApolloHelix

  • The virtual portfolio and practice account: spot and futures (long/short) trading in crypto, gold, silver and stocks, at live prices.
  • The live simulation: watch a rule-based simulation agent trade the same markets by itself and say why it opens each trade. It is not artificial intelligence; it is an educational rule model.
  • The Strategy Lab: test a rule on real history with commissions and slippage included.

Before you take a method that works consistently on a practice account to real money, read the backtesting and paper trading guide.
