How Is Gold Per Gram Calculated? Ounce, Dollar Rate and the Formula

How the gram gold price is derived from the ounce price and the dollar/lira rate: the formula, a worked example, the gap to street prices and what moves the price.

In Turkey the price of gold per gram is derived from the world price of gold per ounce, quoted in dollars, and the dollar/lira rate. Knowing the formula tells you whether a move comes from gold or from the exchange rate.

The formula

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams.

Gold per gram (TRY) = Gold per ounce (USD) × USD/TRY ÷ 31.1035

A worked example

With gold at 4,000 $ per ounce and USD/TRY at 40.00:

4,000 × 40.00 ÷ 31.1035 ≈ 5,144 TRY

This is the theoretical value of pure (24 carat) gold per gram. Jeweller, street and bank prices can differ because of workmanship, spreads and demand.

Why does the price move?

  1. The ounce price changes: interest-rate expectations, the dollar index, geopolitical tension and central-bank buying all matter.
  2. USD/TRY changes: even if the ounce stays flat, a rising rate lifts gold per gram in lira.
  3. Both together: if the ounce falls while the rate rises, gold per gram can stay flat.

So when you look at gold priced in lira, watch both the ounce and the exchange-rate chart.
